I still couldn’t believe it worked. Merlin had done this once before in a vision of sorts, whenever I was about to face the Troll Tribunal, after I had gone into the Darklands, opening the only way that Gunmar could escape. That felt like an eternity ago, and now it had never even happened.

“My orthodontist said I’m almost done with my braces — only four more years.” Toby said to me as we walked our bikes through the school yard. Sure enough, to my left, Steve was shoving Eli into a locker. They had a long way to go to rebuild their friendship.

“Uh, I’m going to head home before Steve finds something big enough to shove me in. Good luck with the audition.” Toby said as he walked away. I had been thinking about the Amulet and who it might choose. Before, when I had gone back in time, it chose Draal. But this time, I had a feeling it was going to be different.

“Hey, Tobes.” I called after him. He stopped and turned to face me.

    “Yeah, Jimbo?”

Once I said it, there was no going back. But it felt right. I smiled. “Take the canal. Maybe you’ll stumble upon something interesting.”

Toby chuckled. “Yeah, right, Jim. Nothing interesting ever happens in Arcadia.”

If only you knew. Or remembered. The bell rang and I watched Toby leave. He was okay. He was alive. Now I had to go win the part of Romeo so I could win the heart of my Juliet.

Last time I was unsure of myself. This time I had the confidence that being a Trollhunter who had saved the world multiple times gives you.

“I’m James Lake Jr., here to try out for the part of Romeo.”

“Go ahead, Mr. Lake.” Mrs. Janneth said.

Eli ran up and gave me his cardboard prop sword. I smiled and spun it in my hand. I took a deep breath. I couldn’t help myself — I looked over at Claire. She looked at me with her big brown eyes. Part of me wanted to take her away and tell her everything. Tell her about us. But I knew that was wishful thinking, and that wouldn’t end well for me. I sighed, then began.

    “Destiny is a gift…”

The audition went as usual. This time I didn’t have to run off wearing a suit of magical armor. Claire came up to me just like before. It’s crazy how I longed for her touch more now than I did then.

    “That was remarkable.”

I laughed. “Thanks. It was from a friend and it stuck with me.”

“Well, he should be a poet.”

I laughed. If only she knew — well, remembered — Blinky. That would have made his life.

“Maybe I can get your number? I can pick you up on my Vespa for school tomorrow?” I offered.

“You have a Vespa?” She asked, her eyes lighting up. I bit my lip.

“Actually, no, I don’t. But I’d love to walk you to school.” I recovered quickly. “Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to practice our lines together if we both get the part.”

    “I’d like that, James.”

“You can call me Jim.” I said, then jumped off the stage. She wrote me her number and address — which I already knew by heart — and gave it to me.

“See you tomorrow.” She waved, then left the gym.

I followed behind her, my mind racing about whether Toby went to the canal or not. I was fighting the urge to run down to Trollmarket to see my friends — Draal and Vendel — all the ones I had lost before.

I was reminded when I pulled up to my house on my bike that there were other fates I needed to change too. Strickler and Nomura. Strickler’s car out front was a reminder that right now, he wasn’t a good guy. Right now, he was the head of trying to free Gunmar from his prison.

I went inside, and he and my mom were sitting at the kitchen table with cups of tea.

“Jim! I didn’t know you were going to audition for Shakespeare!” she exclaimed.

“Yeah, they needed boys to audition, so I thought I might try something new.” I replied with a shrug.

“Mr. Strickler said you invited him over for dinner?” my mom asked.

“Yeah, sorry, I meant to call you. I just wanted to show that my cooking skills are far better than my grades.” I said with a weak laugh.

That made him chuckle. I never thought I’d miss his laugh.

“I was also told to let you know that you’ve been chosen for the role of Romeo.”

“That’s great! You two catch up. I’ll be in the kitchen… and by catch up, I mean get to know each other.” I shut the window that looked into the dining room and pulled out my phone. No message from Toby. Did he go to the canal and the Amulet wasn’t there? Did he find it and just not feel like telling me?

My phone went off, playing my old ringtone: “I am Gunrobot.” I answered without even checking who it was, assuming it was Toby.

    “Well?” I asked.

“I got the part of Juliet!” Claire exclaimed on the other side of the phone.

“That’s awesome! I got Romeo — I was just about to text you.”

“I’ve got to go, it’s dinner time. Are you still able to walk me to school tomorrow?”

    “Of course. See you then.”

We hung up. I was very impressed with this new Jim.

I finished making dinner and set out the plates. Right before we could start eating, my phone started getting spammed with messages from Toby.

“Um… I need to go.” I said, standing up from my seat at the table.

“Go? Where? You have company over.” my mom said, gesturing to Mr. Strickler.

“I know, I’m sorry, but Toby needs me. It’s an emergency. I shouldn’t be long.” I said, then ran out the door and to his house across the street.

That worked out nicely — now my mom and Strickler were going to have alone time with dinner. Basically a date. This was already going much better than last time.

I ran up to knock on his door, but stopped when I heard Toby screaming in his backyard. I rolled my eyes and ran back there.

“Jim! What took you so long!?” he shouted.

I looked Toby up and down. Seeing him in my armor — well, the Armor of Daylight — was unbelievable. Almost like something out of a dream.

“Wow. Are you getting ready for Halloween or something?” I asked, trying to play it cool.

“Don’t play dumb, Jim! I found this in the canal — where you told me to go!”

“You found the armor in the canal?” I walked over and inspected it.

“What? No! This disc!” Toby pointed to the Amulet set into the armor.

    “I think that’s an Amulet.”

“I don’t even know what an Amulet is! Are you pranking me!?”

“You’re the one who has a suit of armor on.” I defended.

“You’re the one who told me to take the canal! You said I’d find something interesting. Was this what you were talking about?” Toby asked, talking fast.

“Relax. You think if I had known there was going to be an Amulet that gave me a magical suit of armor in the canal that I wouldn’t have taken it for myself?” Which is exactly what I did.

“You’re right. Sorry. It’s just… this is something like I’ve never seen.”

Toby held open his hand and a sword formed in it — Daylight.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” Toby exclaimed as he swung Daylight back and forth.

“You have to try this out!” Toby said, holding out Daylight for me.

I reached for it and stopped. Only a Trollhunter can wield Daylight. I wasn’t emotionally ready for it to disappear from my hands.

“Well, now that I can see this isn’t an emergency, I need to get back. Strickler is over for dinner.”

“Strickler? Like Mr. Strickler? Our teacher?”

“Yeah. It’s not a big deal. He wanted to congratulate me on getting the part of Romeo.” I replied, my gaze drifting back to the Amulet.

“Well, good luck with dinner. I need to figure out a way to get this off.” Toby said, pulling at the gauntlets.

“Maybe try relaxing. And I don’t know — put your hand over the Amulet.”

    “Amulet?”

“The disc.” I said, rolling my eyes.

Toby did as I suggested and, sure enough, the armor disappeared.

    “Awesome-sauce! How did you know?”

“I read a lot of books.” I said with a shrug. “Try and get some rest. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I headed back home and finished dinner with my mom and Strickler, which was nice this time since we didn’t end up fighting each other. After he left, I did my homework. I made sure this time I stayed locked in with school and saving the world.

The next day, I met Claire outside her house with her favorite coffee order from our favorite café. She ran down the steps of her porch and came to walk beside me. I offered her the coffee.

“What’s this?” she asked, inspecting the cup.

“A caramel coffee with three extra shots of caramel, extra whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.”

“Wow! That’s my favorite order. How did you know?” she asked, taking a sip.

I smiled and shrugged. “I guess you just give off those vibes.”

I took a sip of my own. We got to know each other on the way to school. This was my favorite part. It was like I was able to fall in love with her all over again. I just needed to make sure she fell for me too.

School was the same, which was helpful. I was relearning things I had already learned. After school was play rehearsal. I was about to take my place center stage when I got a call from Toby. I stepped back and answered. He was freaking out on the other end. I couldn’t even understand what he was saying.

“Toby, calm down. Are you hurt?” I asked. I could hear him breathing fast.

“No, I’m fine, but two monsters came to me last night! I need to talk to you about this now! Before they come back!”

I looked out onto the stage.

“Sorry, Claire…” I whispered, then ran out of the school.
